Gathering: Creating a Bespoke Scottish Beech Dining Table

Updated: Aug 4, 2025

There’s something powerful in the act of gathering.

The coming together of friends and family, or even strangers. Enjoying some food and a few drinks. Exchanging ideas and putting the world to rights. Telling stories of years gone by. Or simply talking about the day and sharing a laugh or a cry.

As sociable animals, we crave connections. And when we gather together we create moments that stay with us.

My next project is centred around this idea: a bespoke, six seater dining table, handcrafted from solid Scottish beech that will undoubtedly be the focus of the room, beckoning people to gather round and enjoy some quality time.

The design process was an interesting one. I started off with wild ideas that were intricate and complicated, there’s a place for those, before stripping everything back and letting the natural material tell the story.

The custom wood tabletop is crafted from just two bookmatched boards, cut from the same beech log. This technique allows the natural grain pattern — complete with knots, cat’s paws, wavy edges and swirling lines — to flow seamlessly down the centre of the table, creating a sense of movement and quiet grandeur.

The beauty of wood, in all its glory, laid bare for all to see.

Because no two logs are ever the same, this particular grain pattern will never be repeated. It’s nature’s fingerprint. A one off. And it makes for the kind of table you can sit at for years and still notice something new in the wood — a knot here, a curl of grain there — much like the evolving conversations and meals that will take place around it.

The legs, on the other hand, are straight and contemporary in style, offering both comfort and maximum seating space. This clean, modern silhouette contrasts beautifully with the organic movement in the tabletop, blending tradition and innovation — a signature of my design approach.

A handmade dining table like this one is more than a piece of furniture. It’s meant to be a place for gathering, for celebration, and year after year of everyday moments.
